What is Music Therapy? Music therapy is a creative, interactive, primarily non-verbal psychological therapy based on the shared use of music and sound to develop a therapeutic relationship and address therapeutic aims. Developing a therapeutic relationship is central to the work.
How does it work? The possible aims of music therapy are many and will depend on the individual person. Sessions can help promote the development of social skills, support and facilitate communication and interaction, improve co-ordination & motor control and enable creative self-expression in addition to providing emotional support.
My approach: I have an open and flexible approach to my work which is based on humanistic principles allied with psychodynamic theory and music-focused practice.
Who do I work with? I have been a fully HCPC registered (and PVG/CRB checked) music therapist since I qualified in 2008. I have experience of working with individuals and groups both in the UK and internationally including children with special needs, adults with mental health issues, traumatic brain injury, stroke and people with dementia. I have completed training in Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) and I am an experienced clinical supervisor.
What happens in a session? In music therapy the aims are therapeutic but the means of achieving them usually involve shared music making or listening. During sessions, I use various instruments and my voice to interact with clients. The music we produce together can be based on well known tunes/songs or freely improvised. Musical ability on the part of the client is not essential.
Where do I work? This varies according to each individual.
Fees from £35 per hour.
Please contact me for more details and any enquiries about clinical supervision.
